Sociological translation study is an important perspective of translation studies after the “cultural turn” and has gained attention from scholars since the 1990 s,some of whom even name this new perspective the “sociological turn”(Merkle,2008,p175.)in translation studies.Among all sociological theories, the mostly consulted and the most representative theories in translation studies are the Theory of Practice of Pierre Bourdieu, the Social System theory of Niklas Luhmann and the Actor-Network Theory of Latour and Callon.Sociological translation studies enlarge the scale of translation studies and diversifies the methodologies. In this thesis, the author will adopt the Theory of Practice of Bourdieu to analyze the text from the perspective of field, habitus and capital, the three core concepts of theory of practice and try to find out factors that influence translation and the mechanism of translation as a social practice.Binu and the Great Wall was translated by the famous Sinologist Howard Goldblatt and published by Canongate of Britain in 2007 in response to the Myth Series Project launched by Canongate in 2005 and has been translated into other languages since then, such as French,Korean,Finnish and so on.Binu and the Great Wall is a story adapted from an ancient Chinese myth called Meng Jiangnv bringing down the Great Wall with tears. In this thesis, the author will analyze the text from the perspective of field, habitus and capital, trying to make clear what factors influence the translation of Binu and the Great Wall, including both some outside factors such as various fields, different kinds of capitals, and some linguistic factors such as the specific strategies employed in the text such as rewriting, free translation, literal translation deriving from the translator's habitus. The thesis aims to figure out how translation functions as a social practice and tries to find some emancipation for the introduction of Chinese literature works into foreign cultures.
