Report On The Screenplay Translation Of Just Like Fireworks From The Perspective Of Functional Equivalence Theory

Since the "Belt and Road" initiative was proposed,China has deepened its exchanges and cooperation with the world in culture and economy.A large number of excellent Chinese literary works enter into the overseas market.As one of the literary genres.Chinese films also attempt to go out of China.Currently,however,more researches are done on screenplay translation from English to Chinese at home and abroad instead of the one from Chinese to English.Therefore,this report attempts to explore the difficulties and strategies of screenplay translation based on a practice of screenplay translation from Chinese to English in which the author participated.In March 2019.the author participated in the screenplay translation project of.Just Like Fireworks produced by a graduate team from Beijing Film Academy.The story takes place in Hunan Province,China.The dialogues in the screenplay contain a large number of expressions with local characteristics,which increases the difficulty of translation.According to Nida's theory of functional equivalence,the response of the target audience and the audience of the original text should be similar.When it is difficult for the translator to fully convey the content of the source language,the form of expressions can be appropriately changed to pursue "the functional consistency"between the source text and the target text.This coincides with the purpose of screenplay translation,namely,to convey the content of the screenplay to the audience and readers,rather than the form.Therefore,Nida's functional equivalence theory has guiding significance in the practice of screenplay translation.This report reviews the author's translation practice,which gives a brief introduction to the content and background of the screenplay,and explains the reasons for the selection of this work.From the perspective of the theory of functional equivalence and combined with practice experience,the report summarizes four difficulties in screenplay translation and three main translation strategies that can be adopted to pursue functional equivalence in the process of screenplay translation in order to provide relevant experience for other screenplay translation practices.
