Happy Childhood Magazine was a religious journal for children founded by the Christian Literature Society which was the largest publishing organization of Christianity in China.The purpose of the magazine was cultivating children's virtue and increasing their knowledge.It had been distributed in mainland China for thirty-seven years and had been sold throughout the country.It had a wide range of content,such as religion,literature,science,geography,and health.The magazine had exerted a wide impact on Chinese society and children beyond religion.But nowadays lacks systematic research on Happy Childhood Magazine is still limited.Combines the original and historical data of the Happy Childhood Magazine,this thesis aims to sort out its development history from the prototype to the complete,and explore the different characteristics presented in each period,thus summarizing its development process,restoring its historical appearance,and investigating its social value and significance.The main body of the thesis is divided into five chapters and the summary of each chapter is as follows:The first chapter focuses on the birth of Happy Childhood Magazine.this chapter mainly describes the background,the purpose,the source of funds and other basic conditions of its founding.The two key points that are not yet clear about the Happy Childhood Magazine are analyzed.One is the time of its publication and another is its relationship with another children's magazine Chinese Boy's Own of Christian Literature Society.The second chapter analyzes the early development of Happy Childhood Magazine,from 1915 to 1937.This section describes the overview of the two stages of the grass-roots period(1915-1927)and the development period(1927-1937),focusing on the analysis of changes.The issue of promotion and sales of the Happy Childhood Magazine in the early development are also included.Then Mrs.D.Mae Gillivray,the editor-in-chief of this period,and her influence on the Happy Childhood Magazine are introduced.The third chapter focuses on the magazine in a prosperous period from 1937 to 1941,which introduces the life of the editor-in-chief Mr.T.S.Leung during this period,the changes he brought to the Happy Childhood Magazine,the characteristics of the magazine during this period and its interaction with society at the beginning of the Anti-Japanese War.The fourth chapter focuses on the Happy Childhood Magazine after the reissue in Chengdu,from 1942 to 1945.This section explains the background,reasons and process of moving to Chengdu,introduces Margaret H.Brown,the editor-in-chief in the Chengdu period who played an important role in the reissue process,then analyzes the new content presented by the Happy Childhood Magazine after the victory of the Anti-Japanese War.The time span of Chapter 5 is from 1946 to 1952,from Happy Childhood Magazine back to Shanghai for publication to its final issue.Divided into three parts,namely Happy Childhood Magazine returned to Shanghai,Happy Childhood Magazine after the founding of People's Republic of China and the final issue of Happy Childhood Magazine,this chapter focuses on the second part which discusses transformation of Happy Childhood Magazine and its causes.In addition,the appendix lists the specific collections and catalogues of "Happy Childhood Magazine " included in this paper.
