A Report On Dance Studio Interpreting For The 2019 ArtsCross/Danscross Program

Interpretation is a complicated trans-cultural and social activity in which interpreter's multiple roles cannot be neglected.However,in a traditional view,interpreters assume passive roles of "a conduit" or "the invisible" in conversations.Scholars have studied the interpreter's roles in settings such as court,community,conference,politics and so on.They challenged the traditional view on interpreters' roles.As the number of China's international educational cooperation programs increases,interpreters in classroom settings assist teachers and students in communication and scholars begin to study classroom interpreting.However,classroom interpreting is still being paid relatively little attention to.This report uses the author's interpreting recordings at 2019 ArtsCross/Danscross Program as the object and analyzes the interpreter's roles from the perspective of Erving Goffman's participation framework theory.The report concludes that from the perspective of production format,the interpreter's role shifts between roles of the"animator",the "author" and the "principal";from the perspective of reception format,the interpreter's role shifts between roles of the "addressed recipient" and"unaddressed recipient".This role shift indicates that the interpreter's role is not as passive as a "conduit".The interpreter's role management will influence other interlocutors and thus influence the conversation process.Goffman's participation framework theory redefines the multiple roles of the interpreter as a co-builder of utterance meaning and conversation process in a particular context,which also offers a novel perspective to analyze interpretation.
