| The cooperative principle is an important linguistic theory describing the cooperation between speakers and listeners to generate effective conversation.In recent years,more and more scholars have begun to study the utilization of cooperative principle in interpreting.What's more,they start to notice the violation of the CP can improve the quality of interpretations.This thesis aims to find more information about the specific functions of violations of each maxim of the CP in interpretations and figure out the violation that is the most beneficial and the least harmful to the quality of interpretations.In this thesis,the research method is quantitative research with an interpreting experiment,a questionnaire and an interview.Based on the cooperative principle,through quantitative analyses on the ten Chinese student interpreters' interpreting performance,there are three major findings.The first finding of this thesis is that under most conditions,as violations of the maxims of quality,manner,and relevance increase,the quality of interpretations declines.The second finding is that the violation of the maxim of quantity is a variable that cannot be affected by the violations of the other three maxims nor affect the violations of the other three maxims.And the last finding is the violation of the maxim of quantity can undoubtedly improve the quality of interpretations only if the interpreters observe the law of violating the other three maxims less.These findings also prove that among the four finds of violations,the violation of the maxim of quantity is the most beneficial and the least harmful to the quality of interpretations.This thesis can provide strategies for interpreters to make choices more wisely and safely when they choose to violate the four maxims of the CP during interpreting.And interpreters can further improve the quality of their interpretations.Besides,this thesis offers inspirations for further research in applications of the CP in interpretations. |
