Analysis Of Difficulties In Translating English Humor And Solutions

The purpose of this dissertation is to analyze the difficulties in translating humorous texts and propose effective strategies and techniques for dealing with them.In this paper,the writer focuses on an English-Chinese book translation project in which she participated as a PM and translator.The book is written in English for children and adults with childlike hearts.The writer then introduces the concept and features of humor and explains the reasons of difficulties in English-Chinese translation of humor.The paper consists of three major parts: Chapter One describes the project in detail,including its background,style and translation procedures;Chapter Two analyzes the difficulties of translating humor from the perspective of differences between Chinese and English languages and cultures;Chapter Three further zooms in on the specific examples from the book project and proposes five useful strategies for translating humor,i.e.literal translation,sense-oriented translation,intentional ambiguity,concept substitution,and inclusion of notes and footnotes.
