The Famished Road and Song of Enchantment are two most representative novels of Okri’s.Through the experiences and experiences of the protagonist,Azaro,the novel shows the impoverished and chaotic social situation in Nigeria after independence.Through an illusory space with disordered time and space,the novel symbolically shows the suffering experience of hunger,poverty,riot,fire and so on.The suffering is an important clue throughout the novel.This paper mainly uses Narrative theories and Post-colonial theory to analyze the writing of misery in the text.The main content of the thesis consists of three parts.The first part combs the understanding and expression of misery in The Famished Road and Song of Enchantment.Through the misery of the characters in novels to take care of the reality of Nigeria and the individual experience of the writer;The second part explores Okri’s position and attitude in describing suffering.In his works,Okri expresses suffering from different standpoints,arouses hope by intensifying pain,and shows his attempt to redeem his own and national suffering in spirit.The third part mainly studies the narrative techniques and strategies of the novel and their role in the expression of suffering.The narrative form serves for the writing of suffering.The combination of symbols,realistic techniques,unconventional space-time structure and the narrator of special children shows the meaning of suffering in a more deep and profound way.In short,Okri’s theme of suffering in The Famished Road and Song of Enchantment,on the one hand,reflects the painful reality of Nigeria and the author’s own experience,on the other hand,it also contains the author’s deep thinking about the way out of suffering.The mixture of Yoruba’s traditional mythology and Western civilization in the novel reflects Okri’s attempt to create a "Third Space" between different cultures in order to rebuild Nigeria’s national beliefs and redeem his spiritual suffering.
