Edward Morgan Forster is one of the greatest English novelists in the twentieth century. He has contributed many excellent works to English literature.A Room with a View, published in 1908,is one of his most lively love novels. After the novel was adapted into a film in 1986,it is regarded the most classical and romantic work by the critics. With its elegant temperament, classical love and idyllic freshness,it not only leaves the audience with the enjoyment of customs, but also impresses the audience with philosophical thinking about love and soul.A Room with a View tells a young woman Lucy’s personal growth in the restrained culture of Edwardian era England.Set in Italy and England, the story is both a romance and a humorous critique of English society at the beginning of the 20th century.Based on Austrian psychiatrist and psychologist Sigmund Freud’s tripartite personality theory, this thesis tries to explore Lucy’s personality from three aspects:id,ego and superego.Psychological defense mechanism contained in ego plays an important role in Lucy’s choices.Subsequently, this thesis also analyses in detail the process of Lucy’s self-transcendence,and gives the reasons why the heroine completes the transformation of her life and lives a happy life.Without external factors,Lucy couldn’t break through the shackles of capitalist society and achieve self-breakthrough,which eventually yields a happy love.Through the interpretation of the heroine Lucy’s tripartite personality, the author aims to reveal the important role of the tripartite personality in the process of the personal growth. If a person properly handles the relationship among id,ego and superego,he or she will have a healthy personality and a happy life.Otherwise,it will usher in a tragic fate.
