A Study On The Relationship Of Metonymy-Metaphor Continuum In Chinese Internet Catchwords

With the rapid development of network technology,network language has enriched human language.It is a new type of text and a functional variant of language.Internet catchwords are typical representatives of Internet discourse,and have obvious characteristics of the times.As a special form of expression,analyzing and researching Internet catchwords has become an important part of linguistic research.According to the analysis of Chinese and foreign literature,scholars mainly use the conceptual metaphor and metonymy theory to explore Internet catchwords.However,the author finds that,as a complex phenomenon of linguistic variation,the relationship between metaphor and metonymy is also reflected in the process of meaning generation of internet catchwords,which needs a comprehensive analysis combining metaphor and metonymy theory.Regarding this interactive relationship,Radden proposed that there is a continuum phenomenon between metaphor and metonymy,and believes that metonymy and metaphor are typical categories at both ends of the continuum,and the middle is the vague area of metonymy-based metaphor.Therefore,based on the previous research,the author chooses the metonymy-metaphor continuum as the theoretical framework,uses the Chinese internet catchwords of the past ten years as the corpus to mainly explore the interactive relationship between metaphor and metonymy in the process of meaning construction,and tries to build a framework of the continuum for internet catchwords,so as to reveal the important role of metonymy and metaphor in the construction of semantics.Through the cognitive analysis of Internet catchwords,the research results of this paper are as follows:(1)The meaning construction of Chinese internet catchwords needs to be comprehensively analyzed from cognitive metaphor,metonymy,and the interaction between them.A continuum relationship is formed among the three,which can be represented by a continuum model.(2)In this continuum model,the left end is the literal meaning of the language,which is the basis of semantic variation.The right end is the independent metaphorical meaning.The fuzzy area in the metonymy-metaphor continuum reflects three types of interaction modes of metaphor and metonymy,which are metaphor from metonymy,metaphor within metonymy and multiple interaction.This model explains the semantic construction of a new type of language from a unified cognitive perspective,and shows the important role of human cognition in semantic formation.(3)Different from conventional languages,the semantic construction process of Internet catchwords includes the interaction of metonymy and metaphor.It reflects the dynamic and hierarchical characteristics of the semantic construction of Internet language,indicating that the Internet catchwords are in continuous development and change.
