A Place Of Discomfort-Identity And Narrative In The Novels Of Chinese Immigrants In North America

With the development of globalization,immigration has become a universal cross-cultural phenomenon.Emigration is not only a displacement in physical space,but also a process of transfer from mother culture to heterogeneous culture.Emigration will inevitably experience a lot of discomfort from root breaking to rooting.Based on the theory of cross-cultural adaptation,this paper analyzes how Chinese immigrants overcome "cultural discomfort" and reconstruct their cultural identity through three literary works,Gold Moutain Blues,Joy Luck Club and Beijingers in New York.Literary works(especially realistic works)have the unique advantage of the complexity of social moral reality,so they also have great value in cross-cultural research.The paper points out that the identity crisis and cultural challenges of Chinese in different periods are different.Zhang Ling's Gold Moutain Blues describes the four generations of Fangs' different types of cultural adaptation,the image of self and "the other" and the author's multi-cultural identity cognition under the historical narrative;Tan EnMei's Joy Luck Club presents the identity dislocation,cross-cultural conflict and reconciliation of Chinese mothers and daughters in the white society,and the identification of Chinese Americans under the author's Chinese narrative;Cao Guilin's Beijingers in New York reflects the living conditions of the mainland immigrants in the United States,the confusion and struggle under the dual culture,and the cultural psychological metaphor under the author's legendary narrative.The author finds that although the first generation of Chinese immigrants and Chinese Americans are faced with different identity puzzles and cross-cultural adaptation strategies,the identity of Chinese still presents commonness and tension;the writer's immigration narrative also changes from reappearance of cultural conflicts to exploration of multiple identities;through literary metaphor to understand many problems of cross-cultural communication,it can promote cross-cultural communication and communication It has a certain value.
