Lady Chatterley's Lover is the last novel of David Herbert Lawrence(1885-1930).It explores the relationship between men and women, human and society as well as nature and society, revealing the cruel fact that the modern industrialized society reduces humanity and separates body and spirit. However, due to a large portion of sex depiction, the novel was banned for long in both America and Europe. In the story, the heroine,Connie, turns herself from an object to a subject;her body and spirit gets unified gradually as well. The reason for this transformation, from Lawrence's point of view,is the eagerness for sex and love of mankind. Therefore, the thesis is named “Subjectification of Body in Lady Chatterley's Lover,” trying to explore the heroine's cognition of body& spirit relationship.Firstly, the thesis discusses a few past changes of body& spirit relationship, stressing the fact that balancing body and spirit are one of Lawrence's literature intentions. The transition from rupture to unification of body and spirit should be attributed to Lawrence's reconstruction of this issue.Secondly, the motif of disability is up for discussion. The disablement of Connie's husband is the main cause of her body alienation and objectification.Thirdly, the thesis probes into Connie's path to subjectification.Disability is the metaphor of borderline between life and death. It suppresses Connie's self but meanwhile intrigues her aspiration to regain humanity through physical sex.At last,Connie gets subjectified, succeeds in cohering her body with her spirit, and gains enough knowledge about sex and body.Rosemarie Thomson's disability analysis,Julia Kristeva's abjection theory and Michel Foucault's talk about the productivity of power in sexuality have all provided theoretical foundation for the discussion. The thesis then concludes that only when the body and spirit are balanced,do human beings regain “humanity,” get subjectified and manage to fight against the alienation caused by industrialization and modernization.
