Iran-Iraq war poetry was created during the Iran-Iraq War and is a special type of Iranian poetry.During this period, the mainstream Iranian poets combined the concept of martyrdom and poetry to mobilize young people to go to the frontlines and to offer their lives without fear of death.Metaphors from the third Imam Hosessin and medieval love mysticism were used to idealize martyrdom to such a degree that martyrdom became an essential part of Iranian identity. In the war poetry, the poets described Hosessin as the role model for Iranian soldiers and interpreted the war against Saddam Husain's army as a redemptive mystic path leading to union with the Beloved. This article demonstrates how modern Persian war poets relied on classical mystical motifs and religious events to legitimize the war against Iraq and to encourage Iranians to fight the enemy and lay down their lives due to longing for spiritual perfection. This article believes that Iranian war poetry is the best tool for Iranian society to mobilize the Iranian people, especially young people to go to the battlefield and fight for their country bravely during the war, which also played a significant role in strengthening the Iranian national identity and their live values.
