Jewish Ethical Choices In The Novels Of The Magician Of Lublin,Enemies,A Love Story,Shosha

Isaac Bashevis Singer is a famous American Jewish writer and Nobel laureate,who is famous for writing about the Eastern European Jewish world.The Magician of Lublin,Enemies,a Love Story,and Shosha as Singer's representative works describe the lives of Eastern European Jews in the 19 th century,Eastern European Jews before World War II,and American Jews after World War II.At present,the study of the three novels at home and abroad is mainly from the perspective of writing techniques and Jewishness,a few scholars combine the three novels with the theory of literary ethics.Based on the theory of literary ethics,this thesis studies the different choices and reasons of those choices made by the characters in three novels,namely,The Magician of Lublin,Enemies,a Love Story and Shosha in terms of Jewish survival ethics,love ethics and family ethics.The thesis is divided into five chapters.The first chapter is the introduction of writers' works,literature review and methodology.The second chapter analyzes the three different ethical choices of the characters in the three novels,namely,forbearance,evasion and timely enjoyment,from the perspective of Jewish survival ethics.The third chapter analyzes the hero's Jewish love ethical choice in the three works.They maintained their love affairs with many women because of questioning God,Holocaust trauma and apocalyptic mentality respectively,each of which violates Jewish ethics' requirement of loyalty.The fourth chapter,from the perspective of Jewish family ethics,studies various forms of father-son relationship,mother-child relationship,husband-wife relationship and their consistency or difference with Jewish ethics.Thus,it is concluded that although the results of Jewish ethical choices by diaspora Jews in different eras are in compliance or violation,the results still come from the influence of Jewish ethics on Jews.
