In recent years,with the reform of education and the acceleration of the pace of the age,the demand for better English education is increasing,and the call for the reform of English major is also springing up.Compared with other universities,the English major in the university of science and technology is faced with more challenges due to the imbalance of resource and difficulty in integrating with other majors.In order to have an overview of English major in the university of science and technology and to proposed suggestions for the development of English major,this research conducted a narrative inquiry on academic activities of English-major postgraduates in a university of science and technology.The writing and publication of paper is one of the most important academic activities of postgraduate students majoring in English.Therefor,this thesis attempted to describe the status quo of paper writing and publication of English-major postgraduates in the university of science and technology,expound the influencing factors of paper writing and publication,and put forward suggestions for improving the academic research abilities.This Thesis selected four postgraduate students majoring in English from a university of science and technology as the subjects of the research.Through self-narrative inquiry and interview,it first collected their process and experience in paper writing and publication,then divided the process into some certain stages,and finally analyzed their experience in various stages of paper writing and publication.By encoding the discourse,extracting and summarizing the topics,this thesis concluded the factors that affect English majors in paper writing and publication in the university of science and technology,and put forward several suggestions from the internal and external aspects to improve the paper writing and publishing ability of English majors in university of science and technology.It is found that the postgraduate students majoring in English in university of science and technology had relatively humble performance in paper writing and publication.These four postgraduates published only 1 or 2 papers each,and none of them published papers in core journals.Postgraduate students are still unfamiliar with the required skills such as topic selection,data collection,induction,text analysis in the paper writing,let alone the parts in paper publication like the selection of journals,contribution of papers,communication with editors,etc.The main motivation of paper writing is to meet the standards of degree,while personal interest is the secondary driving force.The research shows that the postgraduate students of English major do not have a correct understanding of the papers,and the lack of resources and unreasonable course setting of the school directly affect the postgraduate students' confidence in conducting academic thesis.Due to the lack of identity transformation,graduate students lack initiative in the interaction with supervisors and external resources,and the gap between the imagination and reality of postgraduate life also leads to the loss of motivation and confidence in academic research.Based on the factors influencing paper writing and publication of English-major postgraduates in university of science and technology obtained in the survey,the author put forward suggestions from the perspective of internal adjustment and external academic support,hoping to provide enlightenment for the improvement of the academic ability of English-major postgraduates in university of science and technology.
