Reading is one of the most important ways to help students acquire information,master language knowledge,enhance learning skills and improve language application ability.Reading is an important field in foreign language learning,and reading comprehension is also a critical part in the English test papers of the college entrance examination.However,high school English reading teaching still adopts the traditional teaching method.There are three steps: firstly,teachers lead students to read key words;secondly,students are ordered to translate the text and explain key grammar points;finally,students are required to recite the whole passages.This kind of English reading teaching procedure is dull and boring,which confuses students.Negative teaching atmosphere can affect whole foreign language teaching results.Hence,the problems existing in foreign language reading teaching have attracted the attention of teachers and scholars home and abroad in recent years.Genre-based approach is a kind of new teaching method,which applies genre analysis theory to classroom teaching on the basis of schema theory and genre theory initially.Genre-based approach,which emerged in the 1980 s,advocates that readers should be attracted to master the content of the discourse,acquire the knowledge of the discourse,and cultivate the awareness of the genre in the process of teaching according to different peculiarity of languages,article structures and social background,thus improving readers' reading ability.Although genre-based approach has aroused the attention of scholars home and abroad,most of studies have been limited to the teaching of English writing and grammars in universities as well as the teaching of writing and reading in non-English majors.However,there are few relevant studies and teaching practice data in the field of high school English reading teaching.Therefore,in order to further explore the attitude of students to genre-based approach and the efficiency of this new approach in high school English reading teaching,the author of this thesis carries out a four-month teaching experiment in the experimental class(EC)and the control class(CC)with a total of 80 students in Henan Shangcheng Senior High School,Xinyang city,Henan province,hoping to provide satisfied answers to the following questions:(1)How does genre-based approach help students in improving their reading ability,especially in comprehension ability?(2)How does genre-based approach help students form good reading habits and reading strategies?(3)How can teachers apply genre-based approach into reading instruction effectively?This thesis systematically reviews the experimental research of genre-based approach in English reading teaching,and then further introduces the theoretical basis.On this basis,the author of this thesis designs typical teaching samples and carries out interviews,questionnaires and observations,then analyzes related data through SPSS software.The research finds that the application of genre-based approach can effectively help students enhance their reading skills which help students grasp the reading theme and the main idea of the article accurately.What's more,genre-based approach can help students improve their reading ability,especially in improving students' reading comprehension ability.Finally,genre-based approach is able to assist students to develop good English reading habits,cultivate their enthusiasm for learning,and improve their reading speed and reading confidence.
