As a representative comprehensive art form,musical plays have high artistic,literary and social value.In recent years,with the improvement of people's cultural life,the audience's demands for this art form is growing.More and more excellent foreign musicals have entered the Chinese market,making the domestic demand increase.Owing to the lack of research on musical translation in China and the gap of musical translation standards and norms,it is necessary to study the translation of such texts.The practice and study of musical translation is of great practical significance for cross cultural communication and enriching the connotation of translation theory.The E-C subtitling of Broadway English musical Hadestown is selected as the translation material and object of the study.The author analyzes its translation based on Relevance Theory in cognitive pragmatics.After introducing the important concepts of Relevance Theory and the relationship between Relevance Theory and translation,the thesis analyzes the explicitation and implicitation strategy applicable to the subtitle translation of musical plays and corresponding translation techniques that should be flexibly applied in the pursuit of the optimal relevance.The thesis aims at providing references for the practice and research of subtitle translation of musicals in the future.
