In order to promote the spread of ecological culture and introduce more outstanding foreign eco-fictions to the public, translation of eco-fictions is of great practical significance. However, according to the author's statistics, there is still a lack of relevant researches on the translation of eco-fictions so far at home and abroad. In view of this, this paper, guided by Peter Newmark's semantic and communicative translation theory, selects the first chapter of an eco-fiction Prodigal Summer by a contemporary famous American writer Barbara Kingsolver as the English-Chinese translation case study with the purpose of exploring the typical linguistic features of eco-fictions and putting forward practical translation techniques.Based on the translation practice of the first section of Prodigal Summer and under the guidance of Newmark's semantic and communicative translation theory, this paper firstly analyzes the text type and text functions of the original text.According to Newmark's classification of text types,eco-fiction belongs to serious literature which is classified as expressive text, and its translation should focus on semantic translation method. However, the original text also possesses informative function and vocative function. In order to achieve the translation purpose and accuracy, that is,to attract more readers to read the novel and understand its ecological consciousness and literary aesthetics, communicative translation should be flexibly used to deal with some translation difficulties.Through the analysis of translation practice cases, this paper points out that the translation difficulties of the eco-fictions lie in four aspects:the translation of ecological terms, the representation of sensory words and expressions, the translation of metaphor and nominalization.Aiming at the translation difficulties of eco-fictions,this paper further proposes some feasible translation techniques under the guidance of semantic and communicative translation theory:For the translation of ecological terms, literal translation, transliteration and annotation are adopted to guarantee the accuracy of the terms, retain the features of the original text and convey the cultural connotations under the guidance of semantic translation theory. For the translation of metaphor, literal translation is also adopted to retain the original author's thinking process and unique ways of expressions. For the translation of sensory words and expressions, this paper mainly adopts amplification, trying to enhance the aesthetic value of the target text and make the expression more vivid under the guidance of communicative translation theory. For the translation of nominalization, the translator adopts conversion and liberal translation to make the target version more concise, natural and easy to understand. To sum up,this paper flexibly combines semantic translation and communicative translation theory to analyze the difficulties in the translation of eco-fictions and explore feasible translation methods,in the hope of providing some references for the translation practice and research of eco-fictions in the future.
