This paper is a report of a translation project for Billy Whiskers:the Autobiography of a Goat, which is animal novel of children's literature written by Frances Trego Montgmery. The hero of this novel is a smart goat named Billy who is nimble and naughty. The novel tells that Billy was often trapped in dilemma after making troubles, but finally overcame the difficulties with his strong heart and perseverance. The translation is under the guidance of pragmatic empathy theory. This theory was first put forward and applied to pragmatics by He Ziran,a leading figure of pragmatics. He Ziran pointed out:"Communicative parties know their emotional tendencies which can image and understand what they thought.Pragmatic empathy is divided into pragmatic-linguistic empathy and social-pragmatic empathy."In the process of translation, the author tried to translate from the children's view by empathizing with readers. The author reappeared the story vividly to attract young readers by using interjections, onomatopoeia, color terms and reduplication. And the author also properly employed more short sentences and rhetorical questions to help children understand and develop critical thinking.Through this translation practice, the author intended to introduce an excellent foreign children's literature written at the beginning of last century for Chinese children readers. The author not only had a good understanding of the psychological characteristics and thinking modes of children of different ages, but also had a deeper understanding of children's literature. And the author had gained a lot by learning translation theory and practice in terms of translation skills and in the filed of pragmatics.
