This paper puts Matthew Arnold's cultural thoughts into the background of the British Industrial Revolution,and studies Arnold's cultural thoughts from the aspects of economy,literature and political system.The first part focuses on the significance and development process of the two core concepts of "mass" and "culture";the second part studies Arnold's cultural thoughts from the perspectives of culture,literature and nation;the third part focuses on the interrelationship between the concepts of "mass" and "culture",and studies"mass" by combing the influence of Arnold's cultural thoughts on the later cultural schools The formation,change and influence of the concept of culture.At the end of the paper,the author reflects on the value of Arnold's thought in the light of the current situation of social development.
