The verb-directional construction has long been a hot topic in linguistic field for its uniqueness and complexity.A huge amount of researches on verb-directional construction from different perspectives, such as generative theory, construction grammar theory and system-functional theory, have already completed. They mainly focus on the syntactic structure and semantic characteristics of verb-directional construction.Relevant achievements are well applauded.Studies of the verb-directional construction “V shang” mainly concerns on its classification of its semantic meaning and syntactic features. While the research, from the perspective of macro-event theory and on the types of macro-event that the verb-directional “V shang” can characterize,is few to be found. This thesis, with the verb-directional construction “V shang” as its research object, aims to explore the following three questions:(1)How many types of semantic classification the verb-directional construction “V shang” contains and what are they?(2)What kind of macro-event can the verb-directional construction “V shang” represent?(3)What are the syntactic patterns of the macro-event characterized by the verb-directional construction “V shang”?This thesis is based on the data collected from A Comprehensive Grammar Account of Directional Complements(????????)and BLCU Chinese Corpus.First, the author collects all the monosyllable verbs that can enter“V shang”construction from the book A Comprehensive Grammar Account of Directional Complements, with 381 samples in total. Then, these collected 381 verbs are utilized as the retrieval verbs of the verb-directional construction“V shang”to search in the corpus of BLCU Chinese Corpus.More usage-based data is collected. Finally, the semantic types of“shang”in the verb-directional construction are divided based on the analysis of data we have collected. This thesis comes to such findings:(1)the semantic meaning of “shang” in verb-directional construction “V shang” can be classified into four types: directional meaning, temporal meaning,state-change meaning and realization meaning, among which directional meaning is the prototypical meaning of “shang” in the verb-directional construction “V shang”.(2)the verb-directional construction “V shang” can characterize four types of macro-event.To be specific, the verb-directional construction “V shang” with directional meaning characterizes motion event, the verb-directional construction “V shang” with temporal meaning characterizes temporal contouring event, the verb-directional construction “V shang” with state-change meaning characterizes state change event and the verb-directional construction with realization meaning characterizes realization event. And then,“shang” expresses path in motion event characterized by the verb-directional construction “V shang” indicating the starting point and end point of the motion;aspect in temporal contouring event characterized by the verb-directional construction “V shang” depicting the continuing of the action through time;state change in state change event characterized by the verb-directional construction “V shang” describing a property or situation changing from one state to another and realization in realization event characterized by the verb-directional construction “V shang” expressing the result of state changing. Therefore, temporal contouring event, state change event and realization event can be regarded as metaphoric extension of motion event. In the end,the mapping between form and meaning is multiple in that the same verb-directional construction “V shang” can represent more than one type of macro-event and vice versa.(3)There are three types of syntactic patterns of “V shang” construction: 1)“V shang” without objects in the end of a sentence;2)“V shang + le(?)” in the end of a sentence;3)“V shang + Object”.“V shang” without objects in the end of a sentence is usually used to express the stasis-type state change event.“V shang + le(?)” usually appears in the end of a sentence. It is generally used to represent temporal contouring event with respect to degree of manifestation of starting. The object in the third syntactic pattern of “V shang + object” consists of location,a period of time, patient and result, which corresponds to motion event, temporal contouring event, state change event and realization event. In conclusion, this thesis expands the study of macro-event in cognitive linguistics through long exploration on the semantic classification of the verb-directional construction “V shang” as well as the type of macro-event that the verb-directional construction “V shang” can characterize...
