In this report on simulated English-Chinese consecutive interpreting,a video titled I Ching-Books of Changes and Meanings was chosen by the author as the source speech.The main content of this video is about the lines in the chapters of I Ching,and their life-related understanding of this book,from the perspective of western philosophy.The interpreter has completed the simulated interpreting,recorded the process and transcribed the source and target speeches.After the simulated interpreting,the interpreter collected views and comments from the audiences and summarized his strategies of interpreting.By interpreting this speech,the author hopes that the Chinese could understand I Ching in the eyes of a western media,know different opinions of this book from various sides,learn from the advantages of the western ideas and the Chinese ones,and the demands of the interpreting methods that the spreading of I Ching asked for.This thesis consists of four parts.The first part presents the introduction of the background,the description of the task,the aim and significance of this report.The second part introduces the preparation and the implementation of the task.The third part of the thesis discusses how to deal with specialized,cultural,redundant,and vague information in the interpreting process,illustrating strategies adopted with concrete cases.In the last part,the report concludes the skills and experience in the interpreting of classics like I Ching,and the positive influence of interpreting of this kind.The interpreter hopes that the interpreting of this video can lay a relatively good foundation for I Ching culture spreading and communication in the future.Speeches on I Ching is characterized by sciences of management,psychology,and even military strategy,indicating that ideas in I Ching have been possibly spread by the western people and been made closer to western philosophy.The author found that interpreting of this kind calls for a better knowledge of ancient classics and a full preparation of background knowledge,and be flexible in interpreting different types of information according to the context.
