Raymond Williams' interpretation and theoretical construction of tragedy combined with the cultural context of the specific era,he took the changing cultural context as the starting point to explore the relationship between traditional tragedy and modern tragedy.During the process,Williams found that the development of tragedy had a fracture,he attempted to bridge the rift.It reconstructed the modern tragedy, and the theory of its composition contained multiple meanings. Therefore, the study of Williams' tragedy theory is divided into three parts:The first part is to find the fracture turning between traditional tragedy and modern tragedy through Williams' overview of the development course of tragedy.First of all,Williams made a diachronic combing of the previous theory of tragedy, and after combing,he found the turning of tragic art, such as secularization, discretization, disordering, each kind of turn separated traditional tragedy and modern tragedy.Secondly,Williams put his perspective on modern tragic works. From his analysis of liberalism tragedy, private tragedy, tragedy deadlock and predicament, people could see that modern tragic literature had showed signs of loss of interpersonal connection, differentiation of whole life style and division of action. The second part is to explore Williams' bridging reconstruction of modern tragedy based on the premise of tragedy fracture.Williams regarded human cultural experience as the acceptance point between traditional tragedy and modern tragedy, and regarded "structure of feeling" as the intermediary of experience perception.Under the function of "structure of feeling" in modern society,Williams thought that tragedy should be rich in three forms, and they were embodied in drama, daily events, social wars and revolutions. On the basis of his reconstructed tragedy theory,Williams used the concept of human nature scale, collective experience and long-term revolution to bridge the rift between traditional tragedy and modern tragedy. This kind of bridging reconstruction showed Williams' vision of social community, which he hoped to build a community with commonness and individuality in modern society, and he regarded common culture as the cornerstone of social community realization. This is also the implication of modernity implicit in Williams' tragic theory. The third part is to survey the significance of Williams' tragedy theory. The contemporary significance of Williams' tragedy theory is his vision of social community. However, because of the paradoxical relationship in his conception, the theoretical and practical basis of the community he dreamed of is missing, which eventually leads to the collapse of the community of vision, and also dispels the modernity connotation of his theory. But Williams' theory of tragedy has other implications in modern society. For example, his criticism of "tragedy is dead" makes tragic literature have the possibility of re-creation,the idea of common culture makes people pay attention to some commonness of culture, and the universal significance of tragedy as the eternal tone of real life. These are the values of Williams' theory of tragedy.
