During the First World War,the British empire's dominions and colonies were involved in the war. After Canada entered the war,the Canadian expeditionary force(CEF)was formed to fight in Europe. The CEF mobilized about 600,000 men, with more than 60,000 killed. This paper intends to comprehensively evaluate the status and influence of the CEF through the investigation of its establishment and operation during the first world war.The text consists of three parts:The first part expounds the background of the CEF,the process of its formation and analyzes its characteristics. The CEF was formed on the basis of the Canadian militia. As the war continued, the CEF was expanded to the size of four divisions. The CEF is an army force composed of British Canadians,French Canadians, foreign immigrants and a small number of aboriginal people. In addition, the army has fewer professional soldiers and is not a regular army. The second part focuses on the performance of the CEF in the first world war.The CEF began to fight on the western front in March 1915.It was part of the British army and took part in the major allied battles in Flanders and became famous at the battle of Vimy ridge. The fighting level of the CEF continued to improve, and by the end of the war,it had grown into a highly effective force among the allied forces on the western front. The third part discusses the status and role of CEF in the First World War.The CEF was an important arm of the British empire. With the continuation of the war,the status and role of the CEF has been constantly enhanced, and the transition from reserve force to main force has been achieved. At the same time, the participation of CEF had a profound impact on Canada. The Canadian government imposed compulsory conscription in 1917,which led to strong opposition from French Canadians and intensified ethnic conflicts. Moreover, the performance of the CEF has prompted some Canadians to call for a change in the minuteman-centered national defense system and the creation of a national defense force. The participation of CEF was an important factor in Canada's independence after The First World War.
