Abstract/Summary:
Although writing is an important English skill,the writings of many high school students are incohesive and incoherent,which cannot be called as a discourse.As the National English Curriculum Standards for General High School(2017 Version)mentioned,more attention should be paid to the cultivation of senior high school students’ discourse competence.However,the traditional writing teaching method mainly focuses on the accuracy of final written product.Litter attention is paid to the cultivation of students’ discourse competence.In recent years,many researchers have applied collaborative writing to high school students’ writing classes.Existing studies on the effect of collaborative writing on students’ writing have paid less attention to its effects on discourse.The purpose of this study is to investigate whether collaborative writing has a positive effect on students’ discourse competence and to further explore the effect of collaborative writing on students’ textual cohesion and textual coherence.Based on the Sociocultural Theory,the Cohesion Theory and the Interaction Theory,this study takes high school students as the experimental subjects and mainly discusses the following two questions:1).What effects does collaborative writing have on senior high school students’ discourse competence in terms of textual cohesion?2).What effects does collaborative writing have on senior high school students’ discourse competence in terms of textual coherence?There are 120 senior high school students in this study.Their writing paper was analyzed by Coh-Metrix 3.0.Then,SPSS 20.0 was used to analyze the data collected.The finding showed that: 1)collaborative writing has a positive effect on senior high school students’ discourse competence in terms of textual cohesion.2)collaborative writing has a positive effect on senior high school students’ discourse competence in terms of textual coherence.The results of this study show that cohesion and coherence of students’ writing in experimental class has been improved,which showed that collaborative writing can effectively improve the textual cohesion and coherence of senior high school students’ writing,so as to improve their discourse competence.Through this study,we have noticed the effectiveness of the collaborative writing for the cultivation of students’ discourse competence in writing.However,due to the limitations of this study,the effect of collaborative writing on the cultivation of senior high school students’ discourse competence needs to be further explored.
