Practice Report On The Revision Process Of News Translation Of HQU's English Website

Under the background of higher education internationalization,universities' English website plays an increasingly important role in their publicity and image construction abroad.As an integral part of it,the quality of translated news directly affects the image of the university.This report is based on the author's Chinese-English news translation practice of Huaqiao University's English website at the website translation team.Over one year's time coverage,the author has translated 36 pieces of news(14,442 Chinese characters)and collected 129 related revision files.This report aims to explore translation errors edited in the revision process of news translation on HQU's English website and discuss concrete revision strategies taken by revisers in the translation team.It is discovered that in the news translation process of the university's English website,being restricted by the source texts would lead to translation errors including lengthy headlines,wrong information,confusing expressions,illogical narration,conventional and conceptual deviances,as well as ill-formed presentation in the translation texts.This report classifies the above errors into three broad categories: errors in the headline,errors in the main body,and errors in presentation.This report proposes the following strategies through case analysis in the revision process: 1)for errors in the headline,properly omit,abbreviate,and rearrange information;2)for errors in the main body,verify important terminologies,proper nouns,and facts,choose the most apt word or expression,restructure sentences and reorganize the passage in a logical order,as well as generalize cultural-bound ideas;and 3)for errors in presentation,establish standards and apply them in all translation tasks to ensure unification.With the case study of the author's translation errors in news translation of HQU's English website and the discussion of revision strategies taken by revisers in the translation team,this report suggests that in the translation of documents of similar types,a clear division of work should be arranged at the start of translation tasks.Translators should strictly abide by the requirements inside a translation team,pay attention to the journalistic style and linguistic norms,mark problem-arousing parts in translation texts in self-revision,actively participate in the discussion of the revision process and take a timely reflection on the translation errors made,so as to improve translation competence.In the revision process,revisers could adopt an interactive relay method and communicate with translators and translation initiators in due time to draw collective wisdom in the decision-making process,ensure uniformity in terminologies and certain expressions,as well as unify standards for the format to create a distinctive institutional voice and image,and thus improve readers' reading experience.
