This is a translation project report based on the translation of a selection from Translation in Transition: Between Cognition,Computing and Technology,a collection of papers published by John Benjamins Publishing Company in 2017.Chapter 1co-authored by 5 scholars was selected as the source text of this project. This chapter describes an eye tracking study which compared eye movements during reading for comprehension with reading for translation. Results show large significant task effect on different gaze data. The results are interpreted in terms of co-activation of the two linguistic systems during translation. The translation project is of practical significance because it can bring new directions of further studies to translators as well as translation industry and promote the communication between scholars. As an academic book, the linguistic features of the source text include coherency, complexity, formality and objectivity. There are also quite a number of academic terminologies about gaze data and statistics and long sentences which are difficult to translate in the source text. The translation report consists of five chapters.Chapter one is an overall introduction that includes project description, translation process and significance of this project.Chapter two is the source text analysis, including the content, text type and language features of the source text.Chapter three is about Peter Newmark's semantic and communicative translation, and its application on the source text. The fourth chapter focuses on the difficulties and methods. The last chapter is the conclusion which summarizes experiences and lessons from this translation practice and problems remained. This translation practice indicates that the application of semantic and communicative approaches in academic works can accurately retain the original intention of the authors, obey the language habits of the target language readers, and improve the ability of translating academic works.
