The G20(Group of Twenty Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors)summit, also called the meeting of finance ministers and central bank governors of the 20 countries, has developed into an important platform of global economic governance for more than a decade. It plays an indispensable role in sustaining global economic growth. As the world's second largest economy,China's position and role in the G20 have been increasing. In recent years, how Chinese leader put forward the world economy problems and proposed Chinese solutions will become a hot spot at every summit. In order to analyze how Chinese leaders convey attitudes and realize interpersonal meaning through political speeches, this paper made James·R·Martin' appraisal theory as the theoretical basis.Through literature analysis, comparative research, case analysis and other research methods, this paper introduced the appraisal theory systematically and made a combing analysis for the selected President Xi's series of political speeches at the G20 summit. There are four chapters in this paper. The first chapter introduces the research background, research status, research methods and significance of evaluation theory and Xi Jinping's international discourse. The second chapter introduces the appraisal theory and the concept of international discourse, and in the third chapter,a case study is carried out.Based on Attitude System, the case study has found that President Xi showed positive attitude toward China's leading role in the world economy as a major economy and China's “Belt and Road” development achievements;in the judgment system,President Xi fully recognized China's reform, opening market, the Belt and Road cooperation and the steady and sound development of the Chinese economy;in President Xi's series of speeches at the G20 summits, positive valuation resources are the most frequent, which indicate that China has the ability to cope with international challenges and crises, and provide lasting impetus to the world's economic growth.Based on Engagement System, research found that President Xi always used “we” as subject in his speeches, which shows that he is not stating his personal views, but as a national leader, standing in the position of the country and the people, reflecting the will of the broad masses and speaking for the people.Based on Graduation System, researchfound that President Xi used a large number of adverbs to grade his attitude in his speeches.Besides, clarifying adverbs and specific numbers are used to focus on the goal of speech. The last chapter is conclusion.Based on the research study above, this article not only hopes to develop the application of appraisal theory in the analysis of political speech texts and provide a reference for more scholars to write and analyze such political speeches in the later period, but also hopes to provide a reliable theoretical support for better propagating the “China proposition” and “China program” in the world in the future.
