In recent years, the rapid development of information technology has pushed multimodal communication to new heights.Multimodal texts of different genres have become a hotspot in linguistic research.Previous studies on multimodal metaphor and metonymy from the perspective of systemic functional linguistics and cognitive linguistics have shown us the types of representation and distinctive features of multimodal metaphors and metonymies in different genres. However, there are still some issues to be explored further, such as classifications, meaning construction and ways of interaction of multimodal metaphors and metonymies. Thus, this thesis discusses the above issues in the national publicity film(NPF,for short)China by employing conceptual metaphor theory, conceptual metonymy theory, multimodal metaphor theory and multimodal metonymy theory. This thesis manages to answer the following three research questions:(1)What are the types of multimodal metaphors and metonymies in NPF China?(2)How do the multimodal metaphors and metonymies in NPF China construct meanings?(3)How do the multimodal metaphors and metonymies in NPF China interact with each other to present the national image of China?Through analysis, this thesis has the following findings:(1)The multimodal metaphors in NPF China can be divided into four types: the “source(pictorial signs)-target(spoken signs + written signs)” metaphor;the “source(pictorial signs + written signs +music)-target(implied)” metaphor;the “source(pictorial signs)-target(implied)” metaphor;the “source(written signs)-target(pictorial signs)”metaphor. And the multimodal metonymies account for a larger proportion and can be divided into two patterns: PART FOR WHOLE and WHOLE FOR PART.Seven kinds of metonymies fall into the former pattern:(1)CONSEQUENCE FOR ANTECEDENT;(2)INDIVIDUAL FOR COLLECTION;(3)SUBEVENT FOR COMPLEX EVENT;(4)SPATIAL PART FOR WHOLE;(5)CLOTHING FOR IDENTITY;(6)PEOPLE INVOLVED IN AN EVENT FOR THE EVENT;(7)TIME FOR EVENT.The last one consists of two kinds of metonymies:(1)LOCATION FOR LOCATED;(2)ACTION FOR STATE.(2)On the basis of perceived structural similarities and the PATH-GOAL image schema, the meaning construction of multimodal metaphors is realized through metaphorical mappings from source domains to target domains.Based on the contiguity between vehicles and targets, the meaning of the multimodal metonymies is constructed through metonymical projections from vehicles to targets.(3)The interactions between the multimodal metaphors andmetonymies in NPF China are embodied in the following ways:multimodal metonymies represent the target domain of a multimodal metaphor;multimodal metonymies represent the source domain of a multimodal metaphor;multimodal metonymies enriches a multimodal metaphor.Through the above three ways of interaction,NPF China presents a positive, confident and inclusive image of China.
