Toni Morrison is one of the most important contemporary American writers. She is the first African-American female writer to win the Nobel Prize in literature. From the perspective of the writing of suffering, this paper interprets the suffering of African-Americans in Morrison's novels, explores the way for African-Americans to walk out of the suffering, and reveals the reasons that lead to the suffering of AfricanAmericans.Morrison's literary creation reflects the suffering experience of African-Americans.Her work reflects the physical and mental slavery suffered by African-Americans.From Petra's waiting and Sula's awakening,to the black people's unity and national identity,Morrison explored how to help African-Americans get rid of the suffering and get new life, which reflected Morrison's sense of national mission. Her works reveal the suffering of African-Americans caused by slavery, white cultural values and cultural conflicts,as well as the influence of the identity of African-American women writers on Morrison's creation. What makes Morrison a great African-American woman writer is not only her writing skills, but also her strong sense of national responsibility.Suffering is not only personal, but also national and universal. The writing of suffering in Morrison's novels not only plays a positive role in promoting the development of contemporary African-Americans,but also has certain reference significance for how people face suffering.
