Translation is not only the conversion between languages, but also the exchange of two cultures. In the process of cultural communication, the original text has changed in content and form to be better accepted in the target culture. That is to say, translation is a kind of rewriting of the original text.Andre Lefevere,a famous western scholar and one of the representatives of manipulation school, put forward the rewriting theory, namely“translation is rewriting”.The process of rewriting is mainly influenced by three factors:ideology, poetics and patronage, which act together on the translator's translation and affect the translator's results.Rewriting theory has greatly expanded the scope and depth of translation studies.Tao Te Ching is one of the first philosophical works and the earliest works of Chinese classics in China. The humanistic thought contained in it has been explored and pursued by China and the world. The Wisdom of Laotse written by Lin Yutang, which has been published in the western world since 1948,has an essential position among many translations.Lin Yutang spread Chinese culture to the world using unique translation mode, and he was listed as a“20th-century Intellectual”.His works are the typical cases of C-E translation, which have great significance on the overseas spread of Chinese culture. In the light of rewriting theory, this paper, taking The Wisdom of Laotse as a case study, analyses the unique translated and edited methods of Lin Yutang. It aims to profoundly explore the influence of ideology, poetics and patronage on translation. The thesis regards Lin Yutang's creation and rewriting of The Wisdom of Laotse as a cultural activity, which involves many factors such as the original culture, target language, the translator, the author, and the reader.Through the research,it is found that The Wisdom of Laotse has distinctive“rewriting”characteristics:?1?Introduction to the preface, leading by title, and chapter reorganization.?2?translating and interpreting with similar thoughts, that is,explaining Laotse with Chuangtse is one of the most prominent features of Lin Yutang's rewriting mode.?3?Domestication at the lexical level, while foreignization at the stylistic and rhetorical level. The author points out that the manipulation of translation by ideology, poetics, and patrons is not isolated, but interacts with each other.Translation studies should fully consider the role of external factors in the translation process, place the translation in a specific social and cultural background, and point out its values.
