A Comparative Analysis Between Reports Of China And Western Media On U.S President Donald Trump's Three Meetings With Chinese President Xi Jinping Under The Perspective Of Systemic Functional Grammar

With globalization under full swing,and the interdependence between countries has deepened.The diplomatic philosophy and strategies in this new era also receive more attention than ever before.And these changes have attracted many scholars to conduct researches related to discourse.For discourse analysts,applying Systemic Functional Linguistics to analyze diplomatic news discourse has theoretical and practical significance.Therefore,based on Systemic Functional Linguistics and the Critical Discourse Analysis framework,this thesis applies the sub-system of Ideational meaning-Transitivity theory,and the Appraisal Theory of Interpersonal meaning to conduct a data-based discourse analysis.The data of the thesis-diplomatic news reports are collected from leading news agencies at home and overseas,whose release dates are from April to November in the year of 2017.And the news contents are about the official meetings between Chinese President Xi Jinping and US President Donald Trump.The timing of the three official meetings were held respectively from April 6^th to 7^th when President Xi paid a state visit to the US;on July 8^th after the closing of the G20 summit;and from November 8^th to10^th during President Trump's first visit to China.The author selects 12 comprehensive summary news reports from China Daily,Beijing Review,USA Today and Washington Post to conduct a detailed comparative study under Transitivity theory.Moreover,after manually coding resources of Attitude and Engagement system with the aid of UAM Corpus Tool 3,the distribution of each resource is presented in order to conduct comparative studies to explore how diplomatic news discourse is imbued with ideology.In the study,the author chooses some reports featuring ostensible subjective attitudes to illustrate different views on these reports with reference to China's diplomatic philosophy.The significance of this study can be concluded in four aspects:the research can affirm the role of Critical Discourse Analysis in analyzing the diplomatic news discourse;reveal the reporting strategies of foreign media,and unveils how reporters use seemingly value neutral language to express their personal views;help domestic media to enrich their discourse when reporting on political and diplomatic events;enable domestic readers to understand reporting strategies of foreign media so as to encounter the "fake reports" with an open mindset.
