Romanticism, which originated in the 18 th century in Europe,is an ideological trend that has greatly changed both literature and art.It is a movement about literature and art with far-reaching influence. In the beginning,European romantic painters admired the beauty of nature, hoping to achieve freedom of creation and liberation of self-personality,paying attention to the expression of people's subjective emotions and the exertion of their imagination. The concept of "romanticism" was gradually constructed by some thinkers after this western ideological movement, but it did not come into being suddenly, but there were traces of romanticism spirit before this movement.Although the concept of "romanticism" comes from the west and there is no corresponding concept, connotation, and theory of "romanticism" in traditional Chinese painting theory, the spiritual connotation and aesthetic style of romanticism have always existed in ancient Chinese painting. The idea of "harmony between man and nature" in ancient China originated in the early farming era.People hope that man can be in harmony with nature. This idea has always been the mainstream of Chinese traditional culture. This idea is also reflected in the aesthetic expression of ancient Chinese art. With regard to art, there are two traditional masters of Confucianism and Taoism in China.Confucius of Confucianism believes that one should "Entertainment in art",while Zhuangzi of Taoism highly values "unbuttoned".However,Confucianism pays more attention to art as a means to promote moral cultivation, while Zhuang Zi puts forward a further requirement, namely, aesthetics conforming to "Tao".In Zhuangzi's eyes, nature is great beauty. Therefore, art should imitate nature, and at the same time, human nature should be preserved to achieve a kind of natural beauty without decoration, while beauty is non-utilitarian.Only in this non-utilitarian state can creators achieve a real aesthetic realm.Zhuangzi's romantic aesthetic thought influenced the development of Chinese art after him.The creators of ancient Chinese paintings have been following Confucius' track of "wandering in art",and under the guidance of Zhuangzi's aesthetic and philosophical thoughts, they have created many romantic paintings with distinctive national characteristics, which are different from the painting arts of any other country or region.
