| Since the release of China’s Standards of English Language Ability(CSE scales),the society has paid much attention to its applied research. In practical teaching, how to apply and modify the scale according to the situation is the focus of current academic circles. This study attempts to explore the impact of applying CSE writing scales on the English writing ability of junior high school students through an experimental study. The purpose of this article is to answer the following three research questions:(1)Can CSE self-assessment scales improve the English writing performance of junior high school students? If so,how do they behave in writing abilities?(2)Is there a difference in the role of the scales for students at different levels? If so,what are the differences?(3)How should the teacher adapt and use the scale according to the actual teaching environment? The experiment was conducted in a public junior high school in Hangzhou for three months. The experimental class and the control class are taught by the same teacher. The experimental class uses CSE self-assessment scales in the writing teaching. The control class does not use them during the experiment. This research uses both qualitative and quantitative research methods.Six writing tasks, questionnaires, and interviews were conducted during the experiment. After the experiment, the data and information obtained were analyzed in detail by using SPSS22.0.Through this experiment, the following conclusions can be drawn:(1)The use of the Scale can indeed improve junior school students’ writing performance,in particular, the mastery of writing strategies and description has been improved significantly.(2)For students at different levels, the effects of the scales are different.High-and intermediate-level junior high school students perform better than low-level students on writing ability.(3)The user needs to cross-reference the subscales and refine the CSE scales according to the specific writing tasks and the teaching objectives. In the actual application of the scales, teachers should play their supporting and guiding role. |
