English is an international language,for most people,the purpose of learning English is to communicate effectively with people from English countries.Excellent pragmatic competence can effectively promote communication.In foreign language teaching,teachers mainly concentrate on linguistic teaching and neglect the input of pragmatic knowledge.Therefore,pragmatic failures often appear in students' English applied writings.After reviewing literature,it's found that many scholars pay much attention to research on the pragmatic failures in college students' oral English,but very few scholars have done the research on pragmatic failures of high school students' English applied writing.However,in English writing style,applied writing has a communicative function.The 2017 version of National English Curriculum Standard for Regular High School also defines the high school students acquire the competence of English writing.The occurrence of pragmatic failures in high school students' English applied writing is obviously contrary to the demand of the National English Curriculum Standard.Thus,the author of this paper combines the theories of pragmatic failure to analyze the pragmatic failures in high school students' English applied writing.This study takes high school students' English applied writing as the research object.In this study,texts analysis and questionnaires survey were used to explore the categories of pragmatic failure and the causes of pragmatic failures in high school students' English applied writing.Then,some suggestions are provided for English teaching aiming to improve students' pragmatic competence and avoid pragmatic failures in their writing.The research results show that pragmatic failures do exist in high school students' English applied writings.The typical categories of pragmatic failure are as follows: lexical pragmatic failures;syntactic pragmatic failures;mood pragmatic failures and discourse structure pragmatic failures.After analyzing the pragmatic failures from the texts of students' applied writing and the questionnaires analysis of the pragmatic failures,we get the conclusion that the causes of pragmatic failures are: insufficiency of cultural consciousness,neglect of politenesslevel,inappropriate use of speech acts,interlingual transfer,intralingual transfer and other factors.It is also hoped that this research will bring some insights on the improvement of high school students' pragmatic competence and English writing ability in the future.
