On Spatial Narrative Of The Book Thief

The Book Thief is one of famous works of Australian writer Markus Zusak.The novel shows the survival dilemma and spiritual growth process of the characters under the German Nazi rule.Since its publication,scholars at home and abroad have paid more attention to the research on Nazi holocaust and human nature theme,trauma narrative,youth growth literature,narrative perspective and narrative techniques.Few scholars pay attention to the spatial elements of the novel,and have systematic and in-depth discussion on the spatial narrative of the novel.Based on these,this thesis applies the spatial narrative theory proposed by Gabriel Zoran to analyze the topographical space,chronotopic space and textual space found in this novel,presenting the important role of spaces in promoting the narrative process and deepening the theme of the novel.First of all,this thesis analyzes the binary opposite topographical spaces found in the novel.One is increasingly expansive space of the Nazi power.The other is survival space of characters under the Nazi regime.The oppression of the Nazi power on the living space of German people and Jews can be reflected through the description of spatial layout and living environment of Molching Town.And the dream spaces of the characters are further depicted,revealing the penetration and persecution of Nazi rule to the ideas of the German people and the Jews.Under the rule of this expanding Nazi power,the main characters actively strive for their own survival space,so that their inner world can contend against the outer world,and the warmth and healing power in human nature can be displayed.Secondly,this thesis analyzes the chronotopic space in the novel.By analyzing the psychological growth direction,axes and driving power of Liesel,Max and Rudy,the main line of spatial narrative is clarified,the development of the story plot is promoted,and the character images are more prominent.Finally,this thesis analyzes the textual space of the novel through the selectivity of language,the circlestructure,flashback and juxtaposition and multiple narrative perspectives,presenting the three-dimensional and spatial narrative effect of the text,and enhancing the readability of the text.In conclusion,through the interpretation of topographical space,chronotopic space and textual space in this novel,this thesis explores the importance of spaces in promoting the narrative process,shaping characters and deepening the theme of the novel,providing a different perspective for the study of The Book Thief.At the same time,the character trauma and fate changes shown in the novel strengthen the reader's sympathy,inspiring readers' reflection on war and love for peace.
