A Corpus-based Study On Interpersonal Meaning Translation In Modern Science Fiction

Chinese science fictions translated by Chinese-American science fiction writer Ken Liu have received extensive attention from readers at home and abroad,and Ken Liu has made outstanding contributions to pushing Chinese science fictions to the world.In science fiction,the conversations among characters embodied by interpersonal meaning play a vital role in the introduction of cutting-edge science and technology and the construction of fantasy plots.And the interpersonal meaning of systemic-functional linguistics is mainly manifested by modality and mood.Based on self-built Chinese-English Parallel Corpus of Ken Liu's Translation of Science Fiction,combining qualitative and quantitative methods,this thesis makes a systematic study on the translation of interpersonal meaning in science fiction.Firstly,we summarize the characteristics of interpersonal meaning in the source texts.Secondly,according to Ken Liu's translation of interpersonal meaning,we generalize the characteristics of interpersonal meaning in Ken Liu's version.Finally,we explore the reasons behind.As the results show,Ken Liu basically adopts equivalent translation in the translation process,and he also uses these translation methods of transformation and deletion,which have changed the interpersonal meaning in his English translation.In terms of modality,the modality value is higher and the modality orientation is more objective.In terms of mood,Ken Liu retains most of congruent mood expressions and changes part of metaphorical mood expressions to congruent mood expressions.There are four main reasons why Ken Liu adopts above-mentioned methods: influence of translator's habitus,requirement of science fiction style,requirement of image reproduction and requirement of improving readability.
