| The fiction series of Howard Philips Lovecraft,who is an American writer,is known for the illustration of human beings’fear of the unknown.Lovecraft initiates the system of Cthulhu Mythos which wins him the reputation of“one of the most significant 20th-century authors of horror and weird fictions”.The researches on Lovecraft’s fictions represented by“Cthulhu Mythos proper”at home and abroad focus on the six aspects which are the creation motive,the fear effect,racism,the literary value,the expression pattern,and the aesthetic significance.Defining the gaze must be an object about the visual driver generating both the anxiety and jouissance,Jacques Lacan’s gaze theory,including three dimension-the imaginary,the symbolic,and the real,aims to signify that the subject and subjective desire will be respectively destroyed by others and Objet Petit a.Based on Lacan’s gaze theory,this research on“Cthulhu Mythos proper” consisting of 20 Lovecraft’s novellas is to analyze the momentary anxiety fear and the permanent desire fear from the imaginary and the symbolic,and to explore the profound introspection of the brutal status quo of racism,the cold indifference of cosmos and nature,the limited extreme of humanity and sanity and other issues in contemporary society from the real in this fiction series.This research interprets the fear connotations in Lovecraft’s works and probes into the realistic fears projected by these novelettes in consideration of the writer’s inner life experience and outer creation environment,which can help the readers to understand the essence of fear and the practical significance of Lovecraft’s fictions and offer a different angle of the studies on Lovecraftian masterpieces. |
