English writing is an essential part of English learning for senior high school students,while grammatical cohesion is an inevitable part in English writing.Many scholars' research results display that grammatical cohesion directly influences the quality of English writing,but senior high school students usually make mistakes in cohesive markers,text layout and other aspects in English writing.Therefore,it is meaningful to explore the use of grammatical cohesion devices in English writing for senior high school students.Guided by discourse cohesion theory and error analysis theory of Halliday and basic ideas of New English Curriculum Standards,the author studies the issue of grammatical cohesion in senior high school English writing by collecting some English compositions from a senior high school.Then lots of analysis methods are adopted to further analyze investigation results,figure out problems and find solutions.Taking students of Grade Three in a senior high school as research objects,the author starts with grammatical cohesion devices in the students' English compositions and uses statistical analysis method to carry out quantitative and qualitative studies,with a view to probing into errors that senior high school students make in grammatical cohesion devices and countermeasures to the mistakes.In view of deficiencies in the use of grammatical cohesion devices in English writing,effective teaching methods of grammatical cohesion devices in senior high school English writing are discussed,hoping to provide reference for English writing teaching to senior high school English teachers.Research results show that: 1.The utilization rate of grammatical cohesion devices is positively correlated with the quality of English composition.Among four grammatical cohesion devices,connection has the greatest influence on the quality of writing,followed by substitution,and the correlation of reference is the smallest.2.The use of the four grammatical cohesion devices is unevenly distributed,among which,the use frequency of connection is the highest,but its error rate is not the highest.Based on above research results,teaching strategies for teachers and learning strategies for students about grammatical cohesion are concluded,which can prepare consult for teachers' writing teaching and students' English writing learning in high schools.
