Face is an important form of culture. It plays an important role in the social interaction of people, and has been widely concerned by scholars of various fields. However, most of the researches on face focus on the comparison of Chinese and foreign cultures, while gender differences are rarely combined. This thesis studies face behavior by combining gender difference, which helps to explore the gender differences in face behavior of college students and provides some practical basis for intercultural communication.Based on the Face Negotiation Theory, this thesis explores the similarities and differences in face negotiation behavior of college students of different genders by means of questionnaire and interview, and further analyzes the reasons. The questionnaire is designed according to the Face Negotiation Theory, which mainly includes two aspects: face concern and conflict style. The subjects in this study are 190 college students from 10 different types of universities in China, including 94 male students and 96 female students.Subjects are asked to complete the questionnaire according to their own ideas. Results of the questionnaires are analyzed by SPSS 17.0,and the corresponding conclusions are drawn.Based on the questionnaire survey,8 college students are interviewed, including 4 male college students and 4 female college students. Results of the interview confirmed the conclusion of the questionnaire analysis. Results show that there are differences in face concern and conflict style between male and female students.Male college students pay more attention to maintaining self-face and tend to choose dominating and avoiding conflict styles, while female college students pay more attention to other-face concern and mutual-face concern, they tend to choose integrating conflict style. In addition, different communicators can also affect the face behavior of college students. The main reasons for this difference are uncertainty avoidance, gender roles, power distance and gender communication culture.
