Against the backdrop of globalization, countries around the world have not only realized friendly political exchanges and mutually beneficial economic exchanges, but also achieved cultural exchanges and integration. In this context, various genres of English reading have been introduced into China and become an indispensable part of China's book market, which has played a positive role in promoting the development of China's local literary works. It is of certain literary value and social significance to study these materials and reproduce them in Chinese according to the standards of “faithfulness, expressiveness and elegance.”As one of the emerging genres, the detective novel is deeply loved for vivid characters,easy-to-understand dialogues, logical thinking, and the ups and downs of the plot.At present, domestic studies in the field of translation mainly focus on the stylistic features and translation styles of such novels;others occasionally involve translation thoughts and strategies;comparatively speaking, studies on the rhetorical devices are few.In fact, rhetoric is an advanced means of language expression.Sometimes, the correct understanding and appropriate translation of rhetoric directly determine the degree of mastery of a foreign language.Rhetorical device is an indispensable linguistic feature in all kinds of literary styles, and it's representation in another language has always been the difficulty and focus of translation circles. As a translator between two kinds of languages and cultures,he should focus on how to effectively solve the problem of rhetorical expression in translation according to the rhetorical characteristics of different texts and the corresponding translation theories and strategies,so as to achieve the following two purposes: make the translation readers get the same reading experience as the original readers;let the translation readers feel the unique strength and beauty of the original language. It's by no means easy to achieve the complete equivalence between the translation and the original text. Therefore, for the purpose of ensuring translation equivalence to the extent acceptable to the translation readers, taking The Message in the Hollow Oak,volume 12 of the detective stories of Nancy Drew, which has not yet published Chinese translations in China,as an example, the author tries to choose Eugene Nida's functional equivalence theory as the main theoretical basis, and under the framework of Nida's theory which especially emphasizes the effect of translations and the reader response, according to the difficulties in rhetorical translation in the novel, this paper explores appropriate translation methods and techniques. This thesis is a summary of experience and a practical report on how to solve the problem of rhetorical translation expressions under the guidance of functional equivalence theory. This report is mainly composed of five chapters. The first chapter is the introduction, which briefly expounds the research background, research significance and paper structure. The second chapter introduces the translation process of the task completed by the author in this translation activity, which is divided into three stages: preparation before translation, translation process and post-translation work. The third chapter introduces the functional equivalence theory in detail. The fourth chapter is the case illustrations of various rhetoric devices applied in the translation. The final chapter summarizes the translation experience and draw lessons from it.
