| This thesis is an English-Chinese translation project report. The source text of the translation project is A Concise History of The World written by Merry E.Wiesner-Hanks.Due to the limited number of words for the thesis, only the first half of the Fifth Chapter is selected as the translation material. This chapter presents from different perspectives the impact of industrialization after 1800 on the world, especially on Britain and America, which can give Chinese readers a more comprehensive understanding of the development of European and American countries and help them explore the causes of historical events.A Concise History of The World,as a general history book,is an informational text. The translator should not only accurately convey the information of the original text, but also keep its linguistic features as much as possible. Therefore, this translation project is guided by Christiane Nord’s principle of “function plus loyalty”,and adopts corresponding translation strategies for different translation problems such as the translation of terminologies and complex sentences to ensure the accuracy and fluency of the translation,so as to achieve the functional equivalence between the original text and the target text and achieve the target function of cultural communication.Through this translation project, the translator has realized the importance of combining translation practice with translation theory. In addition, strong language skills and sufficient knowledge reserve are essential for a professional translator. However, problems of semantic vacancy and how to meet the needs of different readers need to be further discussed and solved. |
