In the modern global world,English is an important bridge among different countries and different cultures.In the four basic language skills in English study,writing,as an output skill,is an embodiment of the integrating skills of using English.According to the National English Curriculum Standards of Senior High School(2017),comprehension and expressive skills in language learning may complement and promote each other.Students are expected to be trained in a variety of special and integrative language activities to develop their language skills and lay a solid foundation for the real communication.For a long time the traditional approach to teaching English writing has been dominating China's high school English classroom.With years of study,students' level of English writing is still far from satisfactory.It is reported that many students lack writing interest and confidence,which results in their poor writing performance.All these may have some relevance to the teaching methods of English writing.Therefore,many scholars and teachers have carried out researches and reforms on English writing teaching.Thus many innovative approaches to teaching English writing are born,which are more accessible to the rules of foreign language learning and the features of the developing society.Based on Krashen's Input Hypothesis and Swain's OutputHypothesis,the research applies the combination of reading and writing approach to Senior One English writing with the aim of answering the following two questions:1.Will Senior One students' English writing performance be improved after applying the combination of reading and writing approach?2.What changes may come about in students' attitude towards and habit of English writing after applying the combination of reading and writing approach?In order to answer the two questions,an experiment is conducted among Senior One students in a senior high school of Western Inner Mongolia.The experiment lasts three months.The instruments adopted are two tests and one questionnaire.After analyzing the data by SPSS23.0,some conclusions are drawn as follows.1.The application of the combination of reading and writing approach has improved Senior One students' English writing performance in the production of richer content,larger vocabulary,more complex and advanced sentence structures and more logical and complete passages except for grammar.2.The application of the combination of reading and writing approach has helped students change their attitude towards English writing and they begin to develop a good writing habit.The research shows that the approach has a good effect on improving Senior One students' English writing and it is feasible in practice.According to the findings of the research,some suggestions are put forward.1.In the future English writing teaching,teachers should make efforts to develop students' English writing interest.2.Before wiring,students should be encouraged to read more samples related to the writing topic and set down some beautiful sentences to accumulate the input information in vocabulary,writing content and structure for the successful output of writing and to develop a good writing habit.3.In the application of the reading and writing approach,teachers should choose the reading passages which are interesting,relevant and suitable for the character and level of the students so as to improve the efficiency of the English writing teaching.
