| This article takes the representative vernacular newspapers published in Shanghai and surrounding areas in the late Qing Dynasty as the research object,By analyzing the editor-in-chief’s thoughts on running newspapers and novel concepts,Study the theme,content,language,narrative form,etc.of the novels published in vernacular newspapers,and the development of novels contained in the vernacular at different stages,Describe specifically how the vernacular editor-in-chief responded to social trends in the late Qing Dynasty in a special way of reporting novels.The first chapter takes "Royal Vernacular newspaper" and "Wuxi Vernacular newspaper"(later renamed "Chinese Official Voice Vernacular newspaper")as research objects,analyze the novel concepts specifically formed by the intellectuals represented by the Zhang Brothers(Zhang Bochu,Zhang Zhonghe)and Qiu’s(Qiu Tingliang,Qiu Yufang)in the social trends in the late Qing Dynasty,And its influence on the choice of theme and type of the novels published in the early vernacular newspapers.The second chapter takes four vernacular newspapers—Hangzhou vernacular newspaper,Shaoxing vernacular newspaper,China vernacular newspaper and Anhui Vulgar newspaper as research objects,explore the interrelationship between the novels contained in it and the "the revolution in the novel" specifically.First,the publication of the Salvation novels represented by "Poland’s Story" in 1901 became the practice of new novels before the theory of "the revolution in the novel";In 1903,the novels awakening women’s consciousness of resistance represented by the "A Woman’s Patriotic Story" published by "Hangzhou Vernacular newspaper",and "The Lady Army" published by "China Vernacular newspaper",which were a powerful response to “the revolution in the novel”.Secondly,the historical novels and "Shaoxing Recent Events" novels published in "Shaoxing Vernacular Newspaper" reflect the differences in novel styles before and after the "the revolution in the novel";The three novels published in the "Anhui Vulture Newspaper" in 1904 reflected the proposition of the vernacular protagonist Chen Duxiu,as well as the publishing situation of vernacular newspapers in the early stage of the "the revolution in the novel".The third chapter focuses on the novels published in the later period of Anhui Baihua Bao,Xi Jin Baihua Bao,and late Hangzhou Baihua Bao,explore the situation of the novels published after the turn of "the revolution in the novel",At the same time,the role of the late Qing vernacular newspaper novels in the transition from modern novels(1898-1911)to modern novels will also be analyzed. |
