Based on the author's graduation work, this paper embodies his thinking and conclusion of art creation practice. In the form of easel painting, the author's works are expressed based on “instinct”.He reflects how colour are presented in painting by analyzing and studying the connection between colour and instinct. As people gain more understanding of the colour, the colour in painting is presented in a more diversified way.Based on several typical times of painting development in western society, this paper mainly focuses on classicism,impressionism,post-impressionism and early stage of 20 th century. In the evolution of colour in painting,we tend to find that colour is not only playing an auxiliary role for modelling, but also is free from thoughts, rules and meanings after getting rid of the restriction imposed by concepts of modelling. As a special form of language, meaning of language is not only reserved for gloss in this world, but also revealing and questioning the invisibility in this world.Today, ways of thinking based on rationalism in art creation are being widely accepted and adopted. It seems to be difficult for painting to make further explorations and innovations in such a mature ideological system.Based on non-rational ways of thinking, way of presentation like “instinct” offers painting more possibilities.Painters achieved the intention of life through efforts of their instincts. As a result, the author makes assumption boldly: the painter can grasp the nature of the colour though instinct to achieve the creative transcendence of colour.
