The essence of news report is to present facts objectively and fairly. However, news report basically implies the ideology of influencing and changing readers' cognition.Critical discourse analysis can examine the ideology behind the language by analyzing the linguistic features of the text and the social and historical background in which the text is generated,so as to reveal the relationship between language, power and ideology. This thesis aims to reveal the hidden ideology in the language through the critical discourse analysis of the news reports related to the Occupy Central Movement(OCM)in Hong Kong, and remind readers to carefully examine the news reports and form the awareness of critical discourse. On the eve of National Day in 2014,Occupy Central Movement(OCM),which seriously disturbed the rule of law and social order in Hong Kong for more than two months, broke out in Hong Kong.Chinese and western media scrambled to follow the story. In this thesis, the author selected 40 news reports about OCM published by British Broadcasting Corporation(BBC)and China Daily(CD)in the two years after the outbreak of the movement as the linguistic data, and adopt Fairclough's CDA framework to conduct CDA from three aspects of text, discourse practice and social practice. At the textual level, the author makes a comprehensive description and analysis of news reports from the perspectives of lexical choice and transitivity. In the aspect of discourse practice,he mainly explains the generation and understanding of discourse from two aspects of news sources and reporting modes. In terms of social practice,he explains the reasons for the discourse rights and ideologies hidden behind the discourse from the social background, cultural background, economic environment and other perspectives of the BBC and CD.In this thesis, the research results show that BBC and CD express two different attitudes towards the OCM.By subtly highlighting the words and deeds of the demonstrators,BBC describes the OCM as a just and progressive movement launched by the Hong Kong citizens against the tyrannical central government. In contrast,CD demonstrates the adverse impact of the OCM on Hong Kong society and the government's firm stance on maintaining the rule of law and social stability in Hong Kong by providing more comprehensive and reliable comments from the Hong Kong government, experts and the general public. The author argues that the historical background of Hong Kong as a British colony, the international competition environment formed by China's economic development in recent years, and the significant cultural differences between China and western countries have caused the two official media to convey different political ideologies through news reports.Through this thesis, the author suggests that readers learn to discriminate the specific ideology in news reports and develop the ability of critical reading.
