Vocabulary is the cornerstone of language construction and an indispensable part of English language acquisition.More and more attention has been paid to vocabulary acquisition research and language teaching practice at home and abroad.However,high school students generally lack sufficient productive vocabulary storage and cannot apply the learned vocabulary to the productive activities(writing or speaking),which leads to the fact that they often spend a lot of time in the acquisition of productive vocabulary and achieve little effect.Hence,it is particularly important to carry out effective vocabulary teaching to promote the acquisition of productive vocabulary and to cultivate the learners' ability to use the target language accurately and fluently.Learning lexical chunks shed light on how to reduce the burden of memory,shorten the time of processing the target language,overcome the negative transfer of mother tongue,and further improve the accuracy and fluency of communication in English.Therefore,the present study introduces lexical approach from the perspective of productive vocabulary in senior high school English teaching,and aims to explore the influence of lexical approach on productive vocabulary acquisition in senior high school.In this study,two parallel classes in the second grade of Yongnian No.1 middle school in Handan city were taken as the participants.The conventional PPP vocabulary teaching method was still used in the control class,and the lexical approach was carried out in the experimental class for about 4 months.This study made use of the Productive Vocabulary Levels Test(PVLT)designed by Nation and the lexical statistical analysis software-Range as the instruments,attempting to address the following two questions:(1)what is the influence of lexical approach on the size of productive vocabulary?(2)what is the influence of lexical approach on the richness of productive vocabulary? The experimental results indicated that the lexical approach can promote the increase of productive vocabulary size;the frequency of students' using of low frequency words increased;lexical approach plays a certain role in promoting the lexical sophistication and lexical variation,and the role of the former is more significant than the latter.In a word,lexical approach has a positive impact on the acquisition of productive vocabulary in senior high school.Based on the experimental process and results,high school English teachers are suggested to make full use of lexical approach in teaching,focus on cultivating students' awareness of lexical chunks,and improve students' ability to use lexical chunks accurately and fluently through various ways.At the same time,teachers should design different productive activities in the teaching process to encourage students to actively use the vocabulary they have learned,so as to promote the students' productive vocabulary acquisition and level.
