Since the middle of the 19th century, the Qing government faced political crisis and border crisis, and Britain,Russia and other powers stepped up their aggression against China. In 1886,James,a British Indian soldier and explorer, entered the northeast region in the name of Long White Mountain exploration, and according to what he saw and heard,he wrote a book called Long White Mountain. This paper takes Long White Mountain as the research object, analyzes the writing background, main contents, historical value and cognitive limitations of the book from the perspective of historical philology. From the perspective of westerners, the explorers combines field investigation and empirical research to investigate the geographical overview of Changbai Mountain, the immigration activities in the northeast China and the border defense construction in major cities and towns. The book consists of 15 chapters with proper style, rigorous materials and rich contents.Long White Mountain is of great historical value. On the one hand,it reflects the natural ecology of Changbai Mountain.James used advanced scientific instruments and technical measures to obtain a large number of true and reliable data about Changbai Mountain. These data have laid a solid foundation for the systematic scientific study of Changbai Mountain. On the other hand,it is also an important data to study the society and frontier construction in northeast China in the late Qing dynasty.Long White Mountain also has its limitations.Due to the influence of the writingperiod and the author’s identity, there are certain biases in the understanding of some problems. For example, overemphasis is placed on the status and value of ethnic minorities in the history of northeast China, and there is a lack of objective evaluation on the Han nationality.
