Sarah Waters(1966-)is a British contemporary high-profile female writer.Escape is the literary theme that Sara repeatedly expressed in her novels. Most of the escapes in Sara Waters' s works are mainly women's escapes.A rethinking of her own gender awareness is also an impact on the patriarchal society. However,Sara is also concerned about the escape of men.In Waters' s writings, men are on the surface an obstacle to women's escape from tradition and fetters. But in her book, men are also the main subject of fleeing.Compared with the direct and boldness of women fleeing, men's fleeing is more passive, cowardly and deceiving. This article is divided into four parts. The first chapter is a review of Sarah Waters herself and her novels and her research. The second chapter is from the "escape" theme in Western literature, and the British "New Victorian novel" Starting with the theme of "escape" in Sarah and Sara's personal experience, analyze the theoretical significance of the theme of "escape" in Sara's novels. The third chapter divides the types of escape according to the emphasis of the novel.Taking the typical characters in Sara's pen as the entry point, the escape is divided into physical escape and spiritual escape. The fourth chapter is based on the third chapter, from the process of character growth to interpret its relationship with the theme of escaping, and through text analysis methods, study the path of human self-consciousness growth. This article believes that humans have experienced the path of self-awakening——self-reconstruction——self-identification——when they fled, and gradually reached the establishment of their identity and finally found their own identity in the process of escape. In Sara's novel, men and women face completely different belonging issues after fleeing.
