Second language(L2)writing has always been a difficult area for second language learners and a hot topic for second language researchers,and the coherence is a key concept of English writing.Many researches about English writing,regard coherence as a necessary factor that of understanding semantic meaning.And the point of view theory has great value in guiding foreign language teaching as its emphases on the importance of semantic.So,this paper attempts to use the point of view theory to analyze the college English writing coherence.The research subjects of this thesis are 184 non-English major freshmen in UESTC(University of Electronic Science and Technology of China).The materials of this research were these students' compositions.Each student was asked to write the English composition with the topic of ‘the relationship between gender and leadership',and each writing should be about 300 words and finish within 50 minutes on the given topic.By scoring the 184 composition's writing coherence,the author took the top 33% as the high-grade-group and the last 33% as the low-grade-group.Based on the point-of-view theory,the writer coded these materials,and analyzed these compositions from both qualitative and quantitative method.The author attempts to answer three questions:1)From the ideological POV perspective,what are the differences between the English writing high-grade-group and low-grade-group?2)From the perceptual POV perspective,what are the differences between the English writing high-grade-group and low-grade-group?3)From the narrative POV perspective,what are the differences between the English writing high-grade-group and low-grade-group?After the analysis,the results were found that between high-grade-group and low-gradegroup:1)their percentage of chaotic ideological point of view are different at the discourse level,and there is significant difference of the percentage of chaotic ideological point of view at the paragraph level;2)their percentage of chaotic perceptual point of view are different at the discourse level,and there is no significant difference of the percentage of chaotic perceptual point of view at the sentence level;3)both don't have chaotic narrative point of view at the discourse level,and there is a significant difference of the percentage of chaotic perceptual point of view at the sentence level.
