The Moon and Sixpence had been written in 1919.This novel upheld Maugham's consistent realistic fiction's style,and at the same time,it learnt from the art characteristics of the modernist fiction.The author paid attention to the spatial narrative of the novel by diluting the treatment of time.And the novel changed the space from London,Paris,Marseille to Tahiti.It took one place as the basis point of narrative to promote the narrative process,reveal the historical and cultural background behind the space,and display the relationship between the characters and the society as well as the trend of individual destiny.This thesis will discuss how the protagonist Charles Strickland awaken and explore in different material Spaces in his pursuit of art from the perspective of spatial narrative.In addition,it will discuss how the protagonist find the freedom of identity in different social spaces,and break the shackles of psychological space to realize the liberation of life eventually.The thesis mainly consists of three parts:introduction,main body and conclusion.The introduction briefly elaborates the origin of the problem and the research status of The Moon and Sixpence at home and abroad,as well as the theoretical basis and research significance.The first chapter mainly analyzes the four specific geographical scenes in which the protagonist exists around the material space of the story.And it will exposit the historical and cultural significance behind the text.The second chapter is about the social space of the story and the psychological space of the characters.It mainly analyzes the social relations formed by the protagonist in the process of social practice with the change of his identity.Combining with the inner psychology of the characters in different stages and the development of their spirits in different periods,we can interpret the life course of the protagonist.The third chapter analyzes the unique meaning of spatial elements to the research objects from the macro level.The space writing in The Moon and Sixpence not only helps to provide a platform for the construction of the story framework,but also adjusts the narrative rhythm and represents the characters,and at the same time,it plays a certain role in deepening the theme in this novel.The conclusion summarizes the main points of the full text and explicates the significance and uniqueness of the novel's spatial narrative.
